Essential Ubuntu Applications

General list of apps I use on my Ubuntu desktop:

  1. thunderbird – great email client
  2. banshee – quite possibly the best music/media player out there
  3. vlc – this can play any movie you throw at it
  4. transmission-daemon – great for running transmission when you aren’t logged in to the machine
  5. ushare – unpn/dlna media server – works great with xbox 360
  6. filezilla – personal favorite ftp client
  7. pidgin – empathy sucks
  8. gnome-do – this helped me transfer finger memory from OS X
  9. gparted – I am a storage guy – I format and look at things.
  10. ssh – is there anything ssh can’t do?
  11. ubuntu-restricted-extras – youtube is boring without flash
  12. xchat – for when I’m feeling extra creepy
  13. vpnc – great cisco compatible vpn client
  14. network-manager-vpnc – makes it guiful
  15. ttf-droid – I love the android font
  16. audacity – I cut up mp3s too
  17. terminator – awesome terminal app
